Soweto Saturdays 31 July

Every Saturday Sowetans wake up to clean, repair and renew Soweto. Through repairing what we see, we begin to repair how we feel, how we think about ourselves and how we imagine a new future for Soweto.

About the event

For far two long, the Soweto community has been in a state of slow decay. Illegal dumping sites mushroomed all over this historic community, government service delivery did not meet need and private business owned by people residing outside continued to profit while doing very little or nothing to add value to the community.

Soweto Saturday aims to encourage Soweto residents to look at the upsetting conditions they may be faced with in their immediate community and to organise themselves to address the condition. Whether it be the cleaning of an illegal dumping site or hosting Saturday Morning tutorials for Soweto learners, any effort to contribute will have an impmact on the future of this community.

Soweto has historic value that cannot be rivaled. It is also a flat city, lending itself to recreational activities such as bike riding and fun walks. It is densely populated, making it a haven for any small business, the opportunities to create value are endless.

Soweto Saturdays seek to bring like minded Sowetans together in addressing one social challenge, but changes the socio economic future of the community.
