Soweto Saturdays Derby Edition

Every Saturday Sowetans wake up to clean, repair and renew Soweto. Through repairing what we see, we begin to repair how we feel, how we think about ourselves and how we imagine a new future for Soweto. Soweto Saturdays Derby Edition calls Sowetans to come and clean wearing their team colours.

About the event

#FunkItImWalking aims to make it safe for a woman to walk at any time of day in any condition. We believe that safety is valuable and our programmes aim to unlock the value of safety. In the course of doing our work, we experienced the negetive impact the litter and presence of dumping sites in Soweto had on our work and our energy. Communities that are not clean inspire despair. Through our work, we want to inspire people to achieve more. We want to unlock value and opportunity.

We realised that our work would not be complete in the absence of a programme which seeks to make Soweto the cleanest city in South Africa, hence Soweto Saturdays. We would like to see Soweto Saturdays become a culture in Soweto, where all residents of the Soweto Community wake up on a Saturday morning and contribute to the community.

We are starting with the dumping sites and the littering, but we want to establish a culture of recycling or caring for the community and creating community value that we can all benefit from.
